Pilgrim's Progress: Similitude Of A Dream is a full-cast Christian fantasy audio drama that uses cinematic sound design and a rich orchestral score to unveil a world of magic and adventure for your ears and imagination! Christopher Pilgrim is a teacher of magic in the mythical city of Apoleia. Inflicted with an evil curse that he may have brought upon himself, Christopher ventures away from his home in search of a cure and the legendary Mystic City. On his journey, he'll face monsters, magic, danger and discovery. But will his quest for the truth yield the answers he seeks? Join the adventure and find out for yourself! You may find that his journey is your journey as well... Pilgrim's Progress: Similitude Of A Dream is the first episode in a series that aims to re-imagine the classic allegory "The Pilgrim's Progress", originally written by John Bunyan in the late 1600's, into a Christian fantasy adventure. For more than 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress has captured the imagination of millions while painting an honest portrait of the Christian life. Our hope is that "Pilgrim's Progress: Similitude Of A Dream" will capture the imaginations of modern listeners who enjoy fantasy and adventure stories, while also impacting them with the truth it contains. Listen and enjoy it as a magical adventure, or settle in (with your thinking cap on!) to try and peel back the densely packed layers of Biblical truth. Bonus Content: With this and all future releases of our "Pilgrim's Progress" audio series, we're including an audiobook version of the parallel text from "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan! Listen to our production and then immediately compare it to the original, read by Paeter Frandsen and enhanced with sound effects and a musical score!
Re-imagining A Classic These days, remakes seem to be a common occurrence at the box office. But try as they might, these efforts are often judged to be "not as good as the original". So why in the world would I want to take one of the most beloved classics of Christian literature and remake it? Because I believe in the power of its message and want that message to be heard by an audience that might otherwise never hear it at all. Before reading The Pilgrim's Progress for the first time in high school, I thought I had a pretty good vocabulary. Two pages into John Bunyan's introduction to his masterpiece, I was scrambling for a dictionary. With time and effort, I fought through the barriers of culture and language to get a handle on this richly composed classic. The journey was rewarding, but by the end I felt like I'd expended as much effort as "Christian" had. When I think about the insightful observations John Bunyan made regarding life as a Christian, I'm disappointed to realize that today's average Christian will never read The Pilgrim's Progress. In an effort to remedy that, I began working to develop a Christian fantasy audio drama series that would contain as much of the original philosophical and theological content as possible, while repackaging it as an imaginative fantasy adventure story. As I adapted The Pilgrim's Progress, my rule of thumb was: add before subtracting. Where appropriate, I gave background stories to characters that originally had none and changed the names of people and places from allegorical to symbolic. For example, John Bunyan's "City Of Destruction" has now been changed to a city named "Apoleia", a New Testament Greek word for "destruction". Every effort was made to create a "line by line" adaptation of The Pilgrim's Progress, or to at least convey as many ideas as possible that John Bunyan presented in his original work. Some minor philosophical changes have been made in a few instances where Bunyan did not have the benefit of modern Biblical scholarship, or where culture has changed so radically as to render his social commentary out of date. But great effort has been made in the development of this project to present uncompromised Biblical truth. My hope is that listeners will enjoy our story (and the bonus audiobook of the original version we've included) and have some food for thought as they explore what opportunities God has for them in this life and in eternity. -Paeter Frandsen Creator, Spirit Blade Productions |
